A Chatbot Is Not AI: What 40+ CFOs Told Us in Houston at the Insight Summits Roundtable

At the Insights Summits Houston CFO Roundtable, sponsored by Hyperbots, the conversations were less about what AI might do and more about what it has to deliver.

Led by Hyperbots CEO & Co-founder Rajeev Pathak, our team spent the day in one-on-one conversations with more than 40 CFOs and finance leaders from a range of industries. We asked where AI is already paying off, where teams are still finding their footing, and what it takes to get from pilot to production.

We connected with finance leaders across industries, exploring where AI is delivering measurable value, where organizations are still navigating uncertainty, and what it takes to move from experimentation to execution.

What stood out wasn't excitement around AI for its own sake. It was the growing shift toward conversations about business outcomes, operational efficiency, and the role finance leaders will play as AI becomes part of everyday finance operations.

The Line We Heard All Day: Is AI Merely a Chatbot?

If there was one message that kept coming back, it was this one. Finance leaders are getting sharper about the difference between conversational interfaces and AI systems that can actually execute work. The discussion on Houston centered on AI agents that can take action inside finance workflows like invoice processing, procurement, collections, etc., rather than simply answer questions.

That means agents that can:

  • Make decisions based on predefined business rules

  • Handle exceptions intelligently

  • Execute repetitive finance tasks

  • Work across connected systems instead of operating in isolation

  • Drive measurable business outcomes

For many participants, this represented an important shift in how AI projects are being evaluated.

The question is no longer, "Can AI generate a response?" It's becoming, "Can AI complete the workflow?"

Less Oversight, More Ownership: How the CFO Role Is Changing

Another recurring theme was the changing role of finance leadership like the CFOs. Several leaders raised thoughtful questions about how AI adoption will reshape finance teams, not only in terms of technology, but also in terms of responsibilities, organizational design, and even what's expected of a finance executive.

One perspective Hyperbots shared during these conversations:as AI absorbs more transactional work, finance leaders may spend less time overseeing routine operations and more time owning business outcomes. That opens up room for:

  • Strategic decision-making

  • Business performance

  • Financial planning

  • Cross-functional leadership

  • Operational transformation

Rather than replacing finance leadership, AI has the potential to change where finance leaders create the greatest value.

One-Size-Fits-All Automation Rarely Works: Why Finance AI Needs Industry Context

One of the most interesting discussions came from conversations with oil and gas CFOs attending the event. Although many finance challenges appear similar on the surface, participants highlighted how customer collections, vendor payouts, approvals, and operational processes often vary significantly across industries.

These conversations reinforced an important reality about enterprise AI deployment: Finance automation rarely succeeds with a one-size-fits-all approach.

Industry-specific workflows, compliance requirements, operational dependencies, and approval structures all influence how AI agents need to be designed. For organizations operating in complex industries even like manufacturing, customization often becomes a competitive advantage rather than an optional feature.

The Digitally Enabled CFO Panel: Finance Leaders on Strategy and Transformation

The event's panel discussion "The Digitally Enabled CFO: Leading Transformation and Strategic Leadership Across the Enterprise", became one of the day's standout sessions.

The discussion featured:

  • Uriel Saenz, Chief Financial Officer, North America, thyssenkrupp nucera

  • Erika Taurel, Chief Financial Officer, Lummus Technology

  • Richard O'Brien, Chief Financial Officer, SAExploration

Rather than focusing on AI as a future concept, the panel explored how finance leaders are navigating digital transformation while balancing operational realities, leadership responsibilities, and long-term business strategy.

The conversation resonated strongly with attendees and continued well beyond the session itself, becoming a reference point for many of the networking discussions that followed.

From Big Themes to Real Scenarios: The Closing Q&A

The event concluded with an engaging Q&A featuring:

  • Julisa Cruz, US Financial Controller, GRUPO CUÑADO – CUNADO GROUP

  • Ian Fennessy, Business Development Manager, Insight Summits

After a day of big-picture conversations, the session brought the focus back to practical ground. Participants explored what it takes to implement AI in finance, what adoption considerations to plan for, and how these ideas play out in real-world finance scenarios. It was a chance to move from "what is possible" to "what does this look like in my organization?"

From "Should We?" to "How Do We?": The Shift in Finance AI

Across every conversation, one pattern became increasingly clear. Finance leaders have stopped asking whether AI belongs in finance. Now they're asking:

  • Which workflows should be automated first?

  • How do we deploy AI responsibly inside complex finance operations?

  • What capabilities should finance leaders build with AI?

  • How do we manage the change for our teams?

  • How do we measure ROI?

Those questions reflect a meaningful evolution in how AI is being approached across finance organizations. The Houston CFO Roundtable turned out to be less about technology and more about execution.

The Road Ahead for Finance and Accounting

For the Hyperbots team, Houston reinforced something we've been seeing across conversations with finance leaders throughout the year.

The future of AI in Finance & Accounting isn't about adding another tool to the stack. It's about deploying intelligent AI agents that can work across finance workflows, adapt to industry-specific requirements, handle exceptions, and help finance teams focus on higher-value business outcomes.

Thank you to Insight Summits, our panelists and speakers, and every finance leader who shared their perspective in Houston.
